Utricularia calycifida 'Lavinia Whateley' is a rare and highly decorative terrestrial bladderwort that stands out with its large, velvety green leaves and striking flowers with intricate markings. Named after a character from H.P. Lovecraft’s mythos, this cultivar is as dramatic and unusual as its name suggests.
This species is native to South America and grows well in pots or shallow trays with consistently moist, nutrient-poor soil. The leaves are often veined or mottled, and the flowers — appearing in spring and summer — resemble tiny orchids with bold colour and detail. It's an absolute must-have for any carnivorous plant collector or terrarium enthusiast.
Like all bladderworts, U. calycifida is a true carnivorous plant. It forms tiny underground bladder traps to catch and digest microscopic organisms, but most of the attention goes to its stunning flowers and unusual foliage.
This plant comes from our original import from Best Carnivorous Plants in the Czech Republic. You’ll receive a healthy 2cm plug, fully rooted and ready to pot up and grow out.
🪴 Growing Tips & Care Info
- 🔆 Bright filtered light or semi-shade – ideal for windowsills or terrariums
- 🌿 Grows well in pots or shallow trays with high humidity
- 🪴 Use Bladderwort PROmix™ or moist, shredded long-fibre sphagnum moss
- 💧 Keep evenly moist – never let the soil dry out
- 💦 Use the tray method with 0.5–1cm of rain, RO, or distilled water
With the right care, this species will gradually spread to fill its pot and flower reliably each season — one of the most beautiful bladderworts in cultivation.
🌸 Flowering Info
Utricularia calycifida 'Lavinia Whateley' flowers in spring and summer, producing upright stalks with ornate white blooms. Flowering does not stress the plant — so enjoy the show!
Personally imported and grown out at Cultivo, this plant is fully acclimatised to South African conditions — making it stronger and more resilient than freshly imported material.
Due to strict import regulations, this collector cultivar is rarely available in South Africa. This is a special release from our original BCP stock.
